Men’s fashion moves at a snail’s pace. But speed has picked up and some men might want to check on some things helpful to know.

Suits, an endangered species a few years ago, are selling well, especially to younger men. The jackets are often narrowed. Pant legs are often slimmer. (Some designers like high-water pants, but consider your circles. You don’t want to look as if your tailor made a mistake.) And yes, guys, hold in your stomach. Flat-front trousers are still the rule.

Al Leineman, tailored menswear buyer for Halls, says black suits are his best-sellers. But a range of colors offers variety. Brown is increasing in popularity. A subtle stripe adds interest.

Two buttons? Three buttons? Even one. You see it all. Colored shirts (no pinks, please) and straight forward, patterned ties are the fastest way to spruce up your look.

The sport coat is all the buzz. The Wall Street Journal says a modern version is all a man needs.

Tom Julian, a trend analyst with McCann-Erickson Worldwide, says jackets are likely to have touches like side vents, ticket pockets or stitching.

Another idea, Julian says, is country and urban. Lightweight tweed city jackets are examples. Vintage touches look new enough to lure a stylish guy.

Trent Slusher, co-owner of Pinstripes menswear store in Kansas City, Mo., suggests his customers add a short casual coat this fall. “Not a car coat,” he says. “But sort of like a car coat.” It may be in tweed or checks.

Meanwhile, vests are also on the list of shoulds, Julian says.
