LEWISTON — A routine traffic stop in Lewiston on Monday evening led an Auburn officer on a foot chase and resulted in a drug bust, police said.

Deputy Chief Jason Moen of the Auburn Police Department said in a release Tuesday that at about 6:15 p.m., officer Matthew Johnson saw a vehicle violation and attempted to pull over the vehicle.

Moen said that when the vehicle stopped, passenger Terrance Haskins, 30, of Lewiston, ran from the car, initiating a foot pursuit toward the Lincoln Street Canal. Moen said Johnson saw Haskins throw a bag into the canal before Johnson caught the fleeing man.

With the assistance of the Lewiston police and fire departments, Moen said the authorities retrieved the bag, which contained three ounces of crack cocaine and 16 grams of heroin, with a street value of about $7,300, from the canal.

Haskins was being held without bail at the Androscoggin County Jail, charged with two counts of aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, refusal to submit to arrest or detention and violating conditions of release.
