RUMFORD — The Rumford Elks Lodge will host the Maine Children’s Cancer Program Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Hosmer Field Complex.
Registration begins at 8 a.m.; the walk begins at 9 a.m.
“We’ve tried to hold it at the complex because there’s a lot of children walking in the event, and it makes it safer,” said Sandra Welch, who helped organize the walk over 20 years ago. “Next year, I’d like to hold a run for the older kids.”
The Maine Elks Association has been raising money for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program since 1985, when it adopted the program as one of its major projects. Welch said the group has surpassed $3 million in donations.
The Rumford walk is one of seven in Maine on Sept. 20. Others include Lewiston, Auburn, Topsham and Portland.
According to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program Walk website, the purpose of the program is to help finance state-of-the-art equipment, psychosocial services and research to help find a cure for childhood cancer.
