1980 – 2014

Portland — Timothy Durbin, 34, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Sept. 10, in Portland.

Tim was born on Sept. 4, 1980, in Clinton, Md. He attended Charles County public schools where he participated in the gifted and talented program.

The family moved to Maine in 1994. He attended Oxford Hills High School and graduated in 1998. In high school, he was active in drama and was a member of the cast of “The Importance of Being Earnest,” which won the state one-act play festival in 1997. He was also on the math team and won first-place honors at the Pi-Cone math meet in 1998.

Tim continued his education at the University of Southern Maine majoring in math. He graduated in 2003. Loving Portland and not wanting to move, he worked at the Public Market while hunting for a job in the area in his field. An opportunity as an intern in the summer led to full-time employment at Actuarial Designs and Solutions doing actuarial work where he was employed at the time of his death. He had passed three of the actuarial exams.

Tim loved the lifestyle in Portland, where he could walk to many destinations. He was an enthusiastic member of a “hashing” group, which is a social circle of runners and had also participated in the Beach to Beacon race in Cape Elizabeth several times. He was an avid reader and was especially interested in the writing of authors Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett and Stephen King.

He was fond of dining out in Portland and also was an accomplished cook himself. He had many friends, several of whom had been close friends since high school, and often socialized.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Jan and Jeff Ward of Norway; his grandmothers, Virginia Forrest and Thelma Bedient of Norway; his sister, Kate Leigh, currently stationed in Guam in the U.S. Navy; his uncle, Steve Forrest of California; his father, stepmother and stepbrother, Charles, Fran and Andrew Durbin of the Chicago area; his aunt, Deirdre Durbin of Chicago; and many other aunts and uncles in many different states.

Words cannot express our deep sorrow at this time. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
