AUGUSTA — The University of Maine Senior College (UMASC) Scripting Our Lives class will perform at 3 and 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at the Klahr Center, University of Maine at Augusta campus, Civic Center Drive.
Admission is free and refreshments will be provided.
The group is directed by Barbara Helen Baker and, in part, will be oral history and the culmination of the fall semester.
Many are confused by the term oral history theatre, and Baker explained, “It’s part writing and part performing. Classes always begin with theatre and vocal warm-ups — the class members include former professors, healthcare workers and seniors returning to complete college, among others,” in short, people with rich life experiences to share.”
The piece is called “Radio Daze”; it is an oral history performance and contains memories centering around lots of old radio shows, commercials programs like “The Lone Ranger” and “The Shadow.”
It is being setting it up as though doing a live radio show. There will be two old-fashioned mikes, an old radio and people will use scripts this time as it is how radio shows were done.
Each piece will be followed by old radio commercials. It will also recall World War II days, FDR’s fireside chats, popular songs and a funny party-line telephone piece performed by Stephen Cowperthwaite. Other cast members are Mary and Leon Bresloff, Marilyn Canavan, Tom Feagin, Bryant Hoffmann, Pat Onion, Lois Hinckley, Richard Cutliffe, Don Warren, Linda Campana and George Hunt.
UMASC is one of 17 Senior Colleges in the state, and centers most of its activities at the University of Maine at Augusta. For more information, visit www.umasc.org, call 621-3551 or email [email protected].
