Soloists are Danielle Vayenas, soprano; Douglas Barley, tenor; and John D. Adams, bass.
Concerts will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Orion Performing Arts Center in Topsham; and at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at the Freeport Performing Arts Center.
In this monumental work, which took three years to complete, Haydn used his 50 years of experience in composing to create a work characterized by beautiful orchestration in which the capabilities of both solo voices and instruments are strikingly displayed.
Soloists, chorus and orchestra intertwine to draw a vivid musical picture of each season – rejoicing in the gentle arrival of spring, the power of a summer storm, a hunt and the celebration after in autumn, and the somberness of winter.
Through it all runs a thread of the awareness of the beauty of nature and the presence of a supreme being, as expressed in the final movement, “Direct us in thy ways, O God; support us in the strife.”
