Gilbert was born in Brooklyn, New York, studied at Colgate University and Tufts Medical School. He received his post-graduate medical training in Boston. He settled in Maine with his family in 1976.
Gilbert retired from Maine Medical Center in 2008 and continued to do part-time radiation oncology for the next five years. Of his medical career, Gilbert said, “I have had the privilege to meet people who taught me a lot about life, how to live it and how leave it.”
Radiation oncology provided Gilbert the opportunity to treat patients and their families at a critical time in their lives when they were vulnerable and desperately in need of a helping hand. In his book, Gilbert shares those experiences where he realized it was just as important, if not more important, to treat the human being and the family attached to the cancer as it was to treat the cancer itself.
