William Palman was a long-time fixture around town, making the windows of local businesses sparkle, and always ready with a smile.
Uncle Bill was buried Monday.
Two immaculately turned-out, sober young servicemen were in attendance to honor Uncle Bill’s service in World War II. I thank those young men for their service, and for the dignity they brought to a sad and sobering occasion.
I also thank all the veterans of that war — “the greatest generation” — who sacrificed to save America from racist imperialism and fascism.
Thank you also to the veterans of Korea and Vietnam. We are fortunate to live in a nation that affords us the freedom and opportunity that would be unknown under a communist regime.
And I thank those who serve today, against the oppression, brutality and terrorism of extremist “religious” groups.
We all owe a debt of gratitude to those who serve and are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, to preserve the ideals of this nation — freedom, liberty and equality.
We must never forget them.
