FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington will present Carolyn Gage’s award-winning play “The Second Coming of Joan of Arc,” Thursday, March 12, in celebration of Women’s History Month.
Written and performed by Gage, the 7:30 p.m. performance in Lincoln Auditorium, UMF Roberts Learning Center, is free and open to the public.
An American playwright, performer, director and lesbian activist, Gage specializes in retelling the accounts of women in history whose stories have been distorted. In this one-woman show, Gage portrays Joan of Arc as she returns to share her story with contemporary audiences. She tells of her betrayal by the powerful authorities in the church, state and military and of her experiences with their hatred and mistrust of women.
The author of more than 40 plays, musicals and one-woman shows, Gage has also taken “The Second Coming of Joan of Arc” on tour internationally. The play was a successful production in Brazil and was featured in 2007 at theater festivals in Dublin and Montreal. It was named national finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in drama and has been featured on National Public Radio.
Gage has won numerous awards as well as grants from the Maine Arts Commission and the Maine Women Writers’ Collection at the University of New England.
“The Second Coming of Joan of Arc” is for mature audiences only.
