LEWISTON – Maine-based conductor Janna Hymes will lead the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra Saturday and Sunday, March 14-15, in concerts featuring Kabelevsky, Tchaikovsky and Borodin, with violin soloist Lucia Lin performing the Violin Concerto by Julius Conus.
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Franco-American Heritage Center and at 2:30 p.m. at Orion Performing Arts Center in Topsham.
Hymes has appeared as a guest conductor several times with the Midcoast Symphony. She has been music director of the Williamsburg Symphonia since 2004 and the Maine Pro Musica since 2008, and has worked with an extensive international list of orchestras and artists.
Known for her energetic and passionate style, she studied conducting with Leonard Bernstein and Gunther Schuller, and now often leads conducting workshops for the American Symphony Orchestra League.
Lin made her debut performing the Mendelssohn Concerto with the Chicago Symphony at age 11. Formerly concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, she is now a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Muir String Quartet. She has been a prize winner in numerous competitions, including the 1990 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.
The music on this program is rich with the lush melodies for which Russian composers Tchaikovsky and Borodin are known. Borodin’s Symphony No. 2 in B minor is full of musical references to Russian folk tunes and peasant dances. Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet – Fantasy Overture” is nothing less than the epitome of romantic love. The Violin Concerto in E minor by Julius Conus provides a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, as well as a wealth of lyrical tunes. And Kabelvsky’s lively Overture to Colas Breugnon, Op. 24 starts the program off with infectious rhythms.
Tickets are $15 at the door. They may also be purchased in advance for $13 online or at Gulf of Maine Books in Brunswick, Magnolia in Bath, Music & Moore in Topsham or at the Franco-American Heritage Center. Anyone 21 or younger admitted free.
