HARPSWELL (AP) — Sheriffs in Maine say a 28-year-old man died after losing control of his vehicle and striking a car in the opposite lane in Harpswell.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says Eric Allred of Brunswick was driving north on Harpswell Island Road at about 7 p.m. Saturday when he struck a car in the southbound lane.

Allred had to be extricated from his 1998 Subaru Legacy and was pronounced dead by rescue personnel on the way to Mid Coast Hospital.

Sheriffs say a family in the car Allred struck suffered minor bumps and bruises. The parents and sons ages 6 and 2 were all wearing seatbelts.

Investigators say they don’t believe alcohol was a factor but speed was.
