Two of the members of Sheriff Hastings’ liquor squad, Deputies Leonard and McCarthy, seized over 60 gallons of whiskey and other liquors in a strong room in the house at the rear of the Harvard pharmacy and of which one tenement is occupied by Joseph Ouellette, at about 9 o’clock last night. Ouellette was arrested, but disclaims all knowledge of the liquors seized. The Sturgis deputies also raided the Messier drug store and the Eagle drug store Wednesday and seized considerable alcohol.

50 years ago, 1959

The nine-apartment house at 326 Main St., Lewiston, known as Poulin Apartments, has been purchased by the Central Maine General Hospital and will be used for intern and resident housing. The property was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. John P. Poulin.

The hospital is expected to take over use of the property next July. It was reported the sale price was about $66,000.

25 years ago, 1984

Eileen M. Fales will be guest speaker of the Feb. 9 meeting of the Legal Secretaries and Associates at the Homestead Restaurant in Lewiston. Brooks Fashions at the Auburn Mall will offer a small fashion show.

Mrs. Fales will discuss “grooming tips and basics for the working woman” and will demonstrate hair care. She has owned and operated Elite Boutique in Jay for 14 years, is a member and past president of the Lewiston-Auburn Cosmetology Association and has been a vice president of the Maine State Cosmetology Association for 14 years.
