“It’s worse than ‘Pigs in Clover’ to come up Lisbon Street, between eight and nine o’clock in the morning.” commented a Lewiston man on Monday. “It was after eight o’clock when I ran the gauntlet, this morning. It was a case of dodge the man with the broom, climb over hose, steer clear of pools of water on the sidewalk and keep an eye on the streams of water in order to escape a ducking. It ought to be somebody’s business to see to it that the sidewalks are cleaned before eight o’clock in the morning.”

50 years ago, 1958

A decision in the controversial Davis Cadillac Co. zoning proposal will be forthcoming tonight at a 7 p.m. meeting of the Lewiston Zoning Board at the city building.

The auto firm has proposed an extension of its commercial property at 6 East Ave. and the issue has developed into quite a controversy. Among the opponents is the Board of Education which has taken a stand against any further commercializing of land near Martel School, located across the street from the firm.

Lorenzo J. Gaudreau, Chairman of the Zoning Board, told a newsman yesterday afternoon that a decision in the case will be given tonight.

25 years ago, 1983

About 7,000 students from throughout the state are participating in the 1983 Multiple Sclerosis Read-A-Thon, a program that will drum up revenue for MS and promote reading at the same time.

MS is a disease of the central nervous system and has no known cause or cure.

The program is presented to school children through assemblies, according to a press release from the program sponsors. After registering and obtaining Read-A-Thon kits, youngsters seek sponsors in the community. Sponsors donate a certain amount of money for each book the child reads.

Sixty percent of all funds raised by the Maine Chapter will go towards patient services, and 40 percent is earmarked for the National MS Society’s Medical Research programs.
