1927 – 2015

FARMINGTON — George Alvin Allison, 87, of Rangeley, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Julia Love; their children, Nancy (and Michael) Moorman, George Lawrence (and Donna) Allison, June (and Paul) McCarthy, Gerry (and Carol Moore) Allison, Belle Elizabeth White, Judy Dyer and Warren (and Michelle) Allison; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two younger sisters, Jean and Irene.

George was predeceased by his parents, Alvin and Frances (Crosby) Allison; two older sisters, Marguerite and Rae; and a baby brother.

George was born in 1927, in Dover Plains, N.Y. He moved to Rangeley in 1945. He worked as a carpenter, farmer, logger, caretaker and maintenance person for many years.

In 1981, he realized a dream of building a custom sawmill on his property and for over 20 years, this legally blind man produced lumber and built custom furniture, birdhouses, bird feeders, picnic tables and Adirondack chairs. He always had a large vegetable garden and beautiful flowers.

He was a great dad who taught his children many valuable lessons. This sight-impaired man who survived vehicle, logging and mill accidents would say, “If you are going to be dumb, you better be tough.” He was loved and respected by all who knew him.
