George Thomas and Miss Anaise Jolicoeur of Lewiston are to be married in this city Tuesday. This will be the second time they have gone thru a marriage ceremony. The first time was Monday of this week, when, it is claimed, a minister from New Hampshire came to Lewiston and performed the ceremony. The deputy city clerk, Charles P. Lemaire, heard of the marriage and it occurred to him that the couple had never asked for a marriage license. He notified city clerk Lajeunesse.

Mr. Lajeunesse met Mr. Thomas on the street and asked about the wedding. Mr. Thomas said he lived in this country but a short time and was unacquainted with Maine laws. He agreed to be “married again” next Tuesday. The would-be Benedict lost no time placing his marriage intentions on record.

Miss Jolicoeur, it is needless to say, is much surprised to find that she is not Mrs. Thomas. The couple will live in their respective homes until Tuesday.

50 years ago, 1958

A permit to make and bottle bleach water at a filling station near East and Boston avenues was tabled for further study last night by the Lewiston Zoning Board. Arthur Ouellette Jr., who proposes the change from a gas station to bottling plant, said the process would include just adding water to a chemical. There would be little odor from the process, he added. He plans to install a 500-gallon concrete tank to store the chemical. The matter was also tabled since only three members of the board were present last night.

25 years ago, 1983

A record was broken in the Lewiston-Auburn area as Mother Nature apparently forgot that summer – at least for tourists – is supposed to end with the Labor Day weekend. Unrelenting heat and humidity was the order of the day with nary a shower to cool down the steamy countryside. The mercury rose to 90 degrees in the Twin Cities breaking the previous record of 89 set in 1901.
