LEWISTON — A new video showing 20 residents and fans of Lewiston speaking about what they like about the city will make its debut Wednesday.
“It’s really neat, kind of a different group of folks,” said Dot Perham-Whittier, Lewiston’s community relations coordinator. “They tried to get a diverse group of people from different parts of the community. They did a really good job.”
The Lewiston Youth Advisory Council’s documentary, “We Love Lewiston,” will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Guthries Independent Theater, 115 Middle St. Doors open at 6 p.m. and food will be available for purchase.
Members of the youth council will host a question-and-answer session afterward.
Youth council members have made boosting Lewiston’s image their main goal for the year. The group kicked off the “Do You Do Lew?” campaign in October, encouraging residents who like the city to step forward.
The events included creating videos in which people are asked what they love about Lewiston, gathering as many blue-clad people as possible in Kennedy Park for a group photo and distributing decals, bumper stickers and blue T-shirts with the effort’s slogan.
Perham-Whittier said the group came up with the campaign themselves. The current group began working together and meeting this summer.
“All 11 of them brought up the fact that they are tired of people putting down their community because they are really proud of it,” Perham-Whittier said.
The result is a series of videos of residents talking about what they like. They range from Mayor Robert Macdonald to former Mayor Larry Gilbert, city councilors, local students, college professors and community activists.
Some of the interviews are available on the city’s YouTube page.
The council and volunteer Craig Saddlemire of Round Point Movies have edited the shorter individual interviews into a half-hour documentary.
Perham-Whittier said the group finished the movie Thursday night. It will be posted to the city’s YouTube page after Wednesday’s debut, she said.
