1921 – 2015

LEWISTON — Sister Dorothy U. Doyle, Ursuline Sister, 93, died at St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion, Lewiston, on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Dorothy was born in Winslow, on Dec. 2, 1921, the daughter of George and Leonie (Belanger) Doyle. She received her elementary education in the parish schools of Skowhegan and Notre Dame, Waterville and her secondary education at Mount Merici Academy in Waterville, graduating in 1938.

On Sept. 3, 1938, Dorothy entered Mount Merici Convent and received the name Sister Saint James when she became a novice. She pronounced her first religious vows in April 1941 and her final vows in 1944 while a student at the College of New Rochelle. She later obtained a master’s degree in English from Boston College and a master’s degree in theology from Providence College.

She served as a high school teacher in Ursuline schools in Waterville, Sanford, Boston, Dedham, Mass., and Springfield, Mass., teaching religion, English, Latin, algebra, geometry, chemistry, biology and general science. She also generously served nine years as principal of Ursuline Academy, Dedham, Mass., four years as prioress of the Ursuline convent in Dedham and four years as provincial of the Ursuline Province of the Northeast.

Following the death of a brother, Dorothy became her parents’ caregiver until their deaths.

Sister Dorothy is survived by a brother, Terence; a sister-in-law, Jeannette; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, George; and a sister, Kathleen Hope Doyle Murphy.
