NORWAY — The popularity of a night of ordinary people sharing a true experience from their lives has exploded all over the country, including Maine. Now it arrives in the Oxford Hills with “This Is What Happened,” a storytelling program at the Norway Memorial Library, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20. Eight locals bravely tell OMG-stories that range from hilarious to inspiring to life-altering.
Carol Jones will relate a harrowing and funny experience rescuing her naughty dog off the face of Hawk Mountain. Kathy Greenleaf will talk about the joy of being a lifetime runner while Cynthia Riley will tell about the magic of encounters with wild animals as she and her dog walk in the woods. Andy Turner will share the pain and catharsis that comes with writing a memoir about the loss of his brother.
Donna Chickering will speak about the surprise of arriving where she is in her life now. Mike Porter will reveal — with humor — what it is like to live with a medical condition, and Leah Haney will talk about having one of those days when nothing goes right. Finally, Scott Vlaun will speak about an encounter with an artist that changed the direction of his life.
These storytellers will use no scripts, props or accompaniment. Their honest slices of life are five to seven minutes long, and they will surprise, entertain and spark lots of conversation after the show when refreshments are served.
Produced by Sally Jones, the program is another in her series to showcase local talent. The doors will open at 7 p.m. Although this program is free and open to the public, those attending are encouraged to bring canned goods for the local food pantry.
