RUMFORD — The Rumford Historical Society is planning for its spring meetings to be held in March, April and May.

The March meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, instead of the usual third Wednesday of the month. Note the meeting time change from 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Rumford Town Hall auditorium. The business portion of the meeting will be omitted to accommodate the visiting guest presenter’s schedule.

The Historical Society will be sharing that meeting with the Rumford Public Library and the RSU 10 School District. The speaker for the evening will by Elizabeth Cooke, a former University of Maine Farmington writing professor and author. She is also the author of two novels, a non-fiction book, and several short stories.

Cooke will serve as the facilitator for a discussion of the Civil War novel “Uncertain Glory,” written by Lea Wait. Wait is a Maine coastal resident who writes historical novels set in Maine and designed for young adults and adults. Historical Society members are urged to borrow a copy of the book from any of the three local libraries: Rumford Public Library in Rumford; Mexico Public Library in Mexico; and Ludden Public Library in Dixfield. There are several copies available at each location.

Light refreshments will be served following the discussion.

Attendees are requested to enter and exit the Rumford Town Hall from the River Street entrance, near the Police Department.

The topic for the April 15 meeting is in the planning stage. It will be held at 7 p.m. in the Rumford Town Auditorium.

The annual meeting of the members will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, in the Rumford Town Auditorium. Election of officers and board of directors members will be held. The speaker for the evening will be Robert (Bob) Elliott, now a resident of Bethel, but a native of North Rumford. He will discuss the Androscoggin esker and the glacial features of our area. He will follow his talk on May 20 with a guided field trip on Saturday, May 23. The tour will car pool from the Rumford Point Congregational Church. Time, destination, and duration of the tour will be publicized at a later date.

The public is encouraged to attend any and all meetings, and new members are always welcomed.
