• One of the largest seizures of beer made for sometime in Lewiston came Thursday afternoon when deputy sheriffs Leonard and Luce made a haul of 350 bottles and 56 gallons of beer in bulk at the Lower Maine Central depot. The stuff was consigned to the Langley Transportation Company, whose stuff had by seized before by officers.

50 years ago, 1958

NEW YORK – For the first time in 25 years, dressmakers today launched a general strike against the billion-dollar-a-year garment industry. More than 105,000 walked out in nine Eastern states. With a new generation taking over the work benches since the last strike, many of the dressmakers never walked a picket line before. The striking International Ladies Garment Workers Union used sound trucks to brief them on the almost forgotten mechanism of a strike.

25 years ago, 1983

• Pacing back and forth at the end of his chain, the 100-pound cat eyes the two children playing in the yard. The vertical-line pupils in his eyes somehow seem sinister, but his intent is more playful than anything else, according to his owners, Jim and Cindy Anderson of Wales. The Andersons have owned Marshal, their pet cougar, for about a year, and the cat has grown up with their children Jacob and Jacey.

• Falling gasoline prices are causing U.S. automakers to step up production of larger, rear-wheel-drive cars. Ward’s Automotive Reports said in Monday’s edition that the Big Three U.S. automakers – Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp. and Chrysler Corp. – all plan increases in full-size car production.
