LEWISTON — April at the Center for Wisdom’s Women begins with Easter activities, card making on April 1 and an Easter Tea on April 2, both starting at 12:30. Also the morning of the 2nd at 10 there will be a chance to do some Easter baking and decorate eggs. The center will be closed Friday and Monday of Easter weekend.

Paul Drowns from the Nutrition Center comes on April 21 at noon for the Peasant Pantry Prep group. Participants prepare a simple one-dish meal that will be served to the wider community on Thursday, April 23. Serving time that day is between 11:30 and 1:30, and reservations are appreciated. There is no charge for the meal although donations are welcomed. The income is split between the team members who prepared the meal.

The regular “What’s Cookin’?” classes in April include learning to make a healthy trail mix snack on the 7th at 12:30 and a soup making at 10 a.m. on April 14.

Nursing student interns from USM/LAC are at the center every Thursday (except April 2) from 9 to 11 a.m. On the 16th they will lead a gentle and relaxing time called “Sway to the Music.”

The Book Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 27, with Ann Auer leading discussion. The group continues with “You Can Heal Your Life: The Power Within” by Louise Hay. A few library copies of the book are available at the center.

Local artist Sarah Shepley returns to teach another book-making class at 10 a.m. April 7. Another craft time is set for the 14th at 12:30.

Have you been worried about changes in public benefit requirements and how they may affect you? Margaret Craven will be at the center at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, to give a presentation about changes and answer questions.

On April 9 at 10 a.m., Pine Tree Legal will lead a session on the hazards of lead paint. They will share ways to remediate problems, go over your rights as tenants and the discuss the responsibilities of landlords.

Do you need to ride the bus, but been afraid and hesitant to do so? It really is a great and easy way to get around town. Abby White Owl, who is a regular bus rider, along with a guest from the L/A bus company, will be at the center the morning of April 22 to teach about the routes. The group will then be treated to a guided bus ride and leave with passes for a few trips.

The weekly Writing Workshop with Pat Gardiner continues each Monday morning at 10.

A new Playing with Poetry class is scheduled for 10 a.m. on April 1 and 15. This group, now led by a Bates student volunteer Hannah Tardie, will include gently experiencing poems through both reading and writing. She will also offer a collage class at 10 a.m. on April 8.

Regular end of month activities include bingo at 10 a.m. April 28 and the monthly women’s clothing give-away all day on the 30th. The Art Van will visit on the 29th at 10, followed by the April birthday party at 12:30.

A Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Group meets weekly on Mondays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. It is run by Health Affiliates. If you are interested, call Trena Jackson at 333-3278. The group can add new members on April 20.

The center hopes soon to start Women for Sobriety. It is a support group that is an alternative to AA. Call if you are interested.

A weekly Al-Anon group, the only one in Lewiston, meets on Wednesdays at 5:30. The BLT group for Bisexual, Lesbian and Transgendered women and their friends or family meets this month on the 30th at 2 p.m. Sr. Claire Decoteaux, a Dominican Sister, offers a conversational time called “Inner Spirit” most Tuesdays at 12:30.

The center is continually in need of donations of hygiene items to give away. Needed are full-size, unopened, basic items such as shampoo and conditioner, tampons and pads, deodorant, toothpaste/brushes. Unopened smaller sample sizes will also currently be accepted to be used for outreach packs.

The center’s hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. For a full calendar of events, visit www.wisdomswomen.org.
