100 years ago, 1915 
Lisbon street, Lewiston, got its first bath of the season from Pine to Thursday, when the lone sprinkler that the city uses to send ahead of its sweeping machine paraded the street with its blessing of water. For the first time this season since the snow departed, the street was passable without shutting eyes and feeling the way along because of dust.

50 years ago, 1965
A roller skating marathon previously scheduled to take place beginning at midnight tonight at the Rollerdrome in Auburn has been called off following a warning by the Auburn Police Department that the event would be in violation of state statutes. Sponsors of the marathon today pointed out that although the roller skating event would not be held, a drumming exhibition featuring a young Lewiston drummer who plans to play continuously for 48 hours will go off as scheduled at 10 p.m.

25 years ago, 1990
Rep. Rose Aikman, R-Poland, warned Sunday that environmental clean-up could itself become a source of political pork barreling. Speaking at Earth Day ceremonies at All Souls Chapel, Poland Spring, Aikman urged that the private sector be encouraged to help solve problems. “We should be cautious in asking government to tackle environmental issues,” she said. “There are environmental tasks for which government is best suited and others in which the private sector is best suited. We need to have the wisdom to know the difference.”
