100 years ago, 1915
Lewiston police believe that a campaign to prolong the series of burglaries was halted by the opportune arrival of Patrolman Lewis, Tuesday night, at the house of Miss Minnie Quimby, 65 Oak street. He saw a man trying to raise a window sash and another man watching. The pane, instead of being broken, was cut in a half circle as by a window cutter. Lewis gave chase and fired but lost the men between the buildings on Oak and College streets. His gun jammed after the first shot.

50 years ago, 1965
Lewiston’s Urban Renewal Authority is forging ahead with plans for the city’s first project and URA officials have been busy in recent weeks briefing city boards on the final figures. The fate of the project will be decided Thursday at a public hearing scheduled by the Lewiston Board of Mayor and Aldermen. The UR question in Lewiston has met with some bitter opposition since its 4-1 approval by the voters in a 1963 referendum, but the project has now progressed to the point of putting up city money for the work.

25 years ago, 1990
Would you give up $500 to keep a group of people from smoking for just a few hours on one night? Bob Skoglund of St. George, a professional humorist who calls himself the Humble Farmer, will be the speaker at Lewiston’s Ramada Inn on May 9 when the Legal Secretaries Associates of Lewiston and Auburn will hold their annual Boss Night. He’s willing to do the job for free if there’s no smoking. If there is smoking that night, then it’s going to cost the legal secretaries 500 big ones. The check will be all made out in advance, and if everyone is satisfied there’s been no smoking, it will be torn up. Joanne P. Therrien, the group’s secretary, said all members are being advised of the potential saving and are being urged to tell their bosses, who are invited to the event, that there will be no smoking.
