RUMFORD — Two weeks after local resident Toshio Hashimoto invited residents to attend a shiitake mushroom-growing workshop at his greenhouse on Potato Road, he’s opening his doors again.
Carol Emery of Andover, an employee of River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition, attended Hashimoto’s first growing workshop April 18. She said she had people asking her afterward if there was going to be another one.
“They told me they would’ve gone if they knew he was holding a workshop,” Emery said. “I asked Toshio if he wanted to do another one, and he said he would love to do it.”
She said of Hashimoto, “He’s such a great teacher and shares so much information. He’s had years and years of practice, so people will get a lot out of his lesson.”
The second growing workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 2, at Hashimoto’s greenhouse at 6 Potato Road. There is a $15 fee for the workshop.
“I think that we’re getting closer and closer to a place where people care more about buying and eating local,” Emery said. “More and more farmers are sharing what they know, and people seem to care a lot more about the land.”
