PARIS — Police are searching for several “persons of interest” connected to the stealing and destroying of four cars in western Oxford County late last week.
Cpl. Justin Brown of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that police are focusing their search on a “couple” of individuals who are believed to have stolen and destroyed the vehicles.
Two of the vehicles were pushed into the Saco River, one was torched and a fourth was crashed into a ditch in Brownfield, Brown said.
No arrests have been made and police were unable to locate the individuals Monday. Interviews with the car owners all pointed to the same people, Brown said.
The thefts are believed to be opportunistic crimes because the victims had left their keys in the vehicles. Two of the vehicles came from Brownfield, the other two from Hiram and Fryeburg.
The cars were reported stolen Thursday and Friday evenings. On Sunday, a citizen spotted two cars floating down the Saco River.
Brown said investigators believe the thefts are related to a recent incident in which a vehicle was rammed through the gate of the Brownfield transfer station.
