1919 – 2015
PORTLAND — Barbara Hunter Barron, 95, passed away peacefully Friday night, May 15, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
She was born in Portland, on June 19, 1919, to Cora Mae Harris Hunter and W. Stanley Hunter. She lived in Auburn until 1957 and then she moved to Portland. From an early age, Barbara had been very independent. In her later years, she lived on her own and even drove her own car until just a few months ago. She had been living at Birchwoods at Canco since February of this year.
She was married to the love of her life, Chandler L. Barron, on July 6, 1942, in Lewiston. They were happily married for 41 years before he passed away in December of 1983.
Barbara worked at the Portland Teachers’ Credit Union for many years. She enjoyed traveling, dancing and reading. She was an accomplished singer, piano player and seamstress. She knitted many hats for chemo patients and mittens for elementary school students. She was a member of the Woodfords Congregational Church.
She is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, Dawn B. Smith and her husband, James, and Brenda Turner and her husband, George (Skip); four granddaughters and their spouses, Jennifer Lachapelle and her husband, David, Lauren Rockett and her husband, Ned, Tatum Krause and her husband, John, and Tristin Krause and her husband, Brian. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Izaak, Devin, Alana, Briana, Hannah, Jacob, Jackson and Eve, who was born this past Wednesday, May 13. In addition, Barbara is survived by a sister-in-law, Barbara B. Patterson, of Rhode Island; and a niece and nephew.
She was predeceased by her parents; and her husband.
