BANGOR, Maine — Police have yet to confirm the identity of the man killed Saturday night in downtown Bangor when he was struck by a car while crossing Hammond Street, because they have not been able to notify his next of kin.

Lt. Cathy Rumsey said Sunday afternoon that the accident reconstruction team and detectives were still working on the crash from the previous night.

Rumsey also declined to say anything about the driver of the car that hit the pedestrian, saying investigators were still gathering information and working on reports. The lieutenant said she didn’t anticipate further information being released this weekend.

The accident happened around 8:35 p.m., when a Chevy Cruze traveling down Hammond Street hill went through the intersection with Central and Main streets and struck a male pedestrian outside Bahaar Pakistani Restaurant, according to witnesses.

Owners of the restaurant said Saturday night that the victim was a homeless man that they fed regularly on weekend nights as they prepared to close shop. The victim was crossing the road with his shopping cart to get his meal when he was struck.

“It was a loud bang, I mean, really loud,” Farzana Khan, owner of the 24-year-old Bangor eatery, said Saturday night after the crash. She said she was saddened to hear of his death.

The pedestrian was a regular sight downtown, and spent many nights sitting on a bench outside Mexicali Blues.

Police cordoned off the area for several hours Saturday night. The Chevy Cruze involved in the crash was inside the taped-off area as officers reconstructed the accident. The shopping cart was knocked over in the street, and possessions were strewn about the area.

Police have declined to say whether they expect any charges to be filed in the crash.
