FARMINGTON – The Ladies of the Lake, who play traditional music from Ireland, will give a concert Friday, May 4, in Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington.

The “Ladies” are Ellen Gawler, fiddle; Sharon Pyne, wooden flute, tin whistle, bodhran; Maggie Ericson, vocals, button accordion, guitar; and Surya Mitchell, piano, vocals. They specialize in Celtic instrumental music and ballad singing, with ancient ballads, rounds, songs of the sea, and songs with a rousing chorus audiences can sing.

The Ladies of the Lake will perform Irish music ranging from the melodic, flowing music of the southwestern County Claire to the less melodic, choppier sounds of the music of County Donegal, where the terrain is jagged and seaside cliffs are high and rocky.

They will also play some newly written tunes, including some songs written in the old style, children’s street songs collected by the Clancy Family, ballads, and two tunes by contemporary composer Liz Carroll, who is from the Irish community of Chicago.

Admission to the 7:30 p.m. concert, presented by the Arts Institute of Western Maine, is $7 for adults, $6 for senior citizens, and free for ages 15 and under. There are no advance ticket sales. For more information, call 778-4770.
