BATH – “I Am My Own Wife,” a Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Doug Wright, will be presented by the Penobscot Theatre Company at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at the Chocolate Church Arts Center.
Based on real people and real-life events, this work tells the story of real-life survival. Caught up in the great dramas of the 20th century, Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite, survives Nazi regime and its replacement in East Germany, the Soviet-dominated Communist dictatorship.
“I Am My Own Wife” won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play. Wright is best known as Obie Award-winning and Oscar-nominated author of “Quills.” His works for the stage have been produced at Lincoln Center, Geffen Playhouse, the McCarter Theater and La Jolla Playhouse.
