People living in Lewiston and Auburn, as well as the farmers of the surrounding districts, are outspoken in their protests against the removal of the state capital to Portland. They say to do such a think would be the worst piece of legislation ever enacted in Maine. The vote of the Senate proved an eye-opener for some of the local citizens. Lewiston and Auburn people were much surprised when the news reached here that the Senate had voted 17 to 13 for the passage of the bill to change the seat of government to Portland. Many couldn’t understand how it happened.

50 years ago, 1957

• A federal grand jury indicted James R. (Jimmy) Hoffa, a top leader of the Teamsters Union, on charges of setting up a conspiracy to buy secrets of the Senate rackets investigation. Hoffa was arrested by the FBI and Chairman McClellan (D-Ark) of the investigating committee said he was “very gratified” at the prompt indictment.

• 72 percent of voters across the country approve of the way Mr. Eisenhower is handling his job. This is down 7 points from the 79 percent approval registered in January – a rating, incidentally, which equaled his all-time-high.

25 years ago, 1982

• Barring any unforeseen obstacles, Central Maine Medical Center will at last break ground in late April for a regional cancer treatment center. Expected to rival the cancer care capabilities of Maine Medical Center in Portland and Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, CMMC’s facility will house state-of-the-art equipment and embrace a “comprehensive cancer program,” according to hospital officials.

• Edgewater House, a 12-unit apartment building on the banks of the Androscoggin River in Auburn, has opened its doors, and city officials, community development personnel and others celebrated the opening at an open house.
