The principal subject brought up at the business session of Kora Temple was that of building a new temple as a permanent home of the Shrine in the state. The matter was thoroughly discussed from all sides, and many questions were put to the building committee concerning the report they made, which it is said, was favorable to building and selected Lewiston as the place. A building committee will be appointed by Illustrious Potentate Fred L. Odlin of Lewiston at once, and instructions were given last evening for the committee to devise ways and means for the erection of the new building.

50 years ago, 1957

• Gov. Edmund S. Muskie proclaimed March 10-16 as Girl Scout Week in Maine. In his proclamation, the governor asked all citizens to support the Girl Scouts so that “increasing numbers of girls may benefit from the splendid program of training in citizenship which the organization offers.”

• The approximately 100-year-old former Chamberlain school at 76 Academy St. was badly damaged by fire but Auburn firemen, aided by a crew from Lewiston, knocked down the flames before much damage was done to the interior of the structure.

25 years ago, 1982

• More detailed tests must be conducted on tissue from the body of comedian John Belushi, because the initial autopsy did not reveal the cause of death, officials said. Belushi, 33, who won acclaim on television’s “Saturday Night Live” and starred in the films “Animal House” and “Neighbors,” was found dead in a $200-a-day bungalow of the elegant Chateau Marmont Hotel on Sunset Strip.

• General Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor Co. are considering a joint effort to build up to 500,000 small cars a year in the United States, company officials said. The idea of a cooperative production venture was raised at a March 1 meeting in New York between GM Chairman Roger B. Smith and Toyota President Eiji Toyoda, according to statements released by both companies.
