AUBURN – “The Dreamlife of Angels,” the fifth film in L/A Arts’ International Film Series, is a cinema verite-styledrama about two very different young women and their shared responsibility for one another’s lives. The film, directed by Erick Zonca, is in French with English subtitles and has an R rating.
It will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 7-8, at Kirk Hall Auditorium, Central Maine Community College. Tickets are $7 each, $5 for film club members, and may be purchased at the door the night of the showing.
Isa, played by Élodie Bouchez, is 20 years old. She has an optimistic attitude about the hardships of life. She arrives in Lille, after passing through a number of other cities, seeking out odd jobs at every place. Never the same type of job, never for long.
Wherever she goes, she adds to the edifice she is patiently building through her wishes and her generosity, not deliberately but in an almost instinctive way.
She meets another 20-year-old named Marie, played by Natacha Régnier. A woman from northern France, Marie is solitary like Isa, but for different reasons. Marie is unsociable, hypersensitive and rebelling against her background.
The film tells of the relationship that each has with the outside world and the threads of life they hopefully weave.
“The Dreamlife of Angels” has won several prestigious awards, including the 1998 Cannes Film Festival for Best Actress, which went to both Bouchez and Régnier; the 1998 European Film Awards’ European Discovery of the Year, which went to director Erick Zonca; the EFA’s Best Actress, which went to both Bouchez and Régnier, and three 1999 César Awards for Best Actress (Bouchez), Best Film, and Most Promising Actress (Régnier).
