Augustus “Gus” “Alvin” Elliott

1930-2015

Augustus “Gus” “Alvin” Elliott, 84, of Fayette, died early Tuesday morning at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Gus, known to some as “Alvin,” was born at his family homestead on Aug. 19, 1930 in Raymond, New Hampshire, the fourth born out of eleven children to Herbert and Laura (Hartford) Elliott. He attended school in New Hampshire and began working with his father in the saw mill, using cross cut saws, at the age of 13 to help provide for his family. He entered in the United States Marine Corps in 1951 and served until 1953 at which point he joined the Army until his honorable discharge in 1958. Gus proudly served his country for two deployments overseas during the Korean War in both the Marines and Army. He was a life-time member of the VFW.

A hard-work ethic was instilled into Gus at a very young age. Upon leaving the military, he went on to own his own saw mill, Elliott Lumber up until 1970. In 1971, he moved to Dixfield where he worked at Dixfield Lumber until his retirement in 1988. Although retired, he continued working at his son’s lumberyard, Twin Rivers Building Supply until he was 81 years old. He was a hard-working man who never stopped providing for his family.

Gus was a highly productive man, never wasting a minute of the day. He was a precise man of technicality and had a mathematical talent for crunching numbers. He enjoyed challenging others with trivia and fun facts. He was a story-teller and always had a good joke at the ready for his beloved company. He was a true Maine man and enjoyed fishing (especially with his grandchildren). A true patriarch in every sense of the word.

Macie Joe Morin, 5 days old, was guided to Heaven in the arms of an angel, early Friday morning, June 26th at Maine Medical Center in Portland, following complications due to a premature birth.

She was born Sunday, June 21, 2015 in Lewiston, the daughter of Bradley J. Morin and Katherine Richard of Jay. Although her time here was brief the memory of her precious soul will remain in the hearts of her parents and family forever.

A quote from one of Macie’s doctors: “That she was loved for every day, every minute, every second of her life. That she tried so, so hard to get better. This is how I know that her mom and dad are going to be ok. Macie could have only gotten her determination and grit from them.

“Macie was not able to get better because she was too delicate, but she fought and tried. Her parents will have to try hard, too, but they can be inspired by Macie’s example. Macie showed us all that you never know how strong you are until you have no other choice. I know her parents will be strong, too.”

She attended school in Wilton, and lived in North Jay where she gave birth and raised five children with her husband. While the children were growing up, they brought them into the woods to work alongside both she and Charlie. Together they were married 78 years.

Myrtle, known to many as “Nana,” worked at Norwalk Shoe for many years until its closing. After Charlie’s passing in 1998, she became a homemaker, baking apple pies, rhubarb crunch, and pumpkin cookies for her family. She loved to prepare for the holidays and her annual Christmas Eve open house which at times would have 50+ family members visiting her.

She looked forward to having firewood delivered so she could help her family “pile it;” she loved her wood heat, (including last winter)! She enjoyed to “watch” the neighborhood, her visits from her family, and just being in her home. “Nana” has left a huge void in our family and will be missed dearly.
