LONDON (AP) – The long-running legal battle over photos from the 2000 wedding of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones was going to Britain’s highest court.
Judges in the House of Lords were sitting Monday to decide whether celebrity magazine OK! is entitled to compensation from rival Hello! magazine, which published secretly snapped pictures of the couple’s lavish wedding at New York’s Plaza Hotel.
OK! – which had an exclusive contract with the Hollywood couple – sued Hello! after the rival publication ran its own pictures of the event.
A High Court judge ruled in favor of OK! in November 2003, ordering Hello! to pay costs and damages of more than $3.8 million.
Hello! appealed, arguing that it had run its own wedding pictures as a “spoiler” to its rival’s coverage – a common practice in journalism.
Last year, the Court of Appeal agreed, dismissing a claim by OK! that its rival’s spoiler had unlawfully interfered with its business. The judges overturned the costs and damages ruling and ordered OK! to pay back the money it had received.
A panel of Law Lords, judges who sit in the House of Lords and make up the country’s highest court, were due to hear OK!’s challenge to that ruling starting Monday.
Douglas, 62, and Zeta-Jones, 37, who received $28,000 in damages from Hello! after the original trial, weren’t expected to be in court for the weeklong hearing.
During a dramatic six-week hearing at the High Court in 2003, Zeta-Jones said she had felt “violated” when Hello! published its “sleazy and unflattering” pictures.
She singled out an image that showed Douglas feeding her wedding cake, saying, “I don’t usually like my husband shoving a spoon down my throat to be photographed.”
LILONGWE, Malawi (AP) – A High Court judge has postponed his ruling on a challenge to Madonna’s plans to adopt a Malawian baby.
Judge Andrew Nyirenda was unavailable to give his ruling Monday as he was attending a conference, Lilongwe High Court registrar Ken Manda said.
Manda said the ruling was now expected early next week.
Nyirenda was to rule on a challenge to the adoption proceedings by a coalition of human rights and child advocacy groups.
On Oct. 12, Nyirenda granted the 48-year-old pop star and her husband, filmmaker Guy Ritchie, an “interim order” allowing them to take 13-month-old David Banda to their home in London.
The rights groups argue the government cut legal corners to “fast track” the adoption because of Madonna’s celebrity status.
Yohane Banda, 32, has said he wants David to stay with Madonna and Ritchie, 38.
He surrendered his son to an orphanage after his wife died last year. The couple’s two other sons both died in infancy from malaria.
On Friday, Banda married a woman who is three months pregnant.
ROME (AP) – Gina Lollobrigida’s wedding to her longtime boyfriend has been postponed until next year.
Lollobrigida will marry Javier Rigau y Rafols of Barcelona, Spain, on Jan. 27, the 79-year-old Italian actress said Monday. He is 34 years younger than Lollobrigida.
They were set to wed in New York later this month, but decided to hold the ceremony in a Rome church “given the interest and the affection of many European friends, in particular Italian and Spanish ones,” the couple said in a joint statement.
The couple, who met at a party in Monte Carlo, Monaco, have been dating for 22 years.
It will be the second wedding for Lollobrigida, once dubbed “the most beautiful woman in the world” after the title of one of her movies. She was divorced from her previous husband in 1971.
Lollobrigida, who embodied the prototype of Italian beauty, began making movies in Italy just after the end of World War II.
Her screen credits include “The World’s Most Beautiful Woman,” “Come September,” “Trapeze,” “Bread, Love and Dreams” and “Never So Few.”
She has co-starred with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Humphrey Bogart, Yul Brynner, Rock Hudson, Frank Sinatra, Sean Connery and Tony Curtis.
In recent years, she has returned to art, first with photography and then with sculpture.
LONDON (AP) – Pete Doherty was released on bail after he was arrested on suspicion of possessing crack cocaine, police said.
The on-off boyfriend of supermodel Kate Moss was arrested after he was spotted driving his car erratically near his east London home, police said.
The 27-year-old Babyshambles frontman, along with car’s other two occupants, were arrested on suspicion of drug possession.
All three men were released from Bethnal Green police station Sunday pending analysis of the substances recovered, said a Scotland Yard spokeswoman, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with force policy. They must report back to police next month.
Doherty was expelled from The Libertines in 2004 after band members issued an ultimatum for him to tackle his drug habit.
