FARMINGTON — Single runs in the fifth and eighth innings propelled Tri-Town to a 2-0 upset win over Franklin County in a Zone 2 first round playoff game, Tuesday evening at Hippach Field.

Tri-Town (11-8), the No. 7 seed, advances to Wednesday’s double-elimination phase of the tournament. They will face, No. 1 seed Bessey Motors in a 4:30 p.m. start. Franklin, the No. 2 seed, is eliminated from the tournament, finishing the season with a 13-6 record.

Tri-Town’s Shawn Murphy and Franklin County’s Amos Herrin locked in a pitcher’s duel, with Herrin registering seven strike outs over the first, four innings.

Murphy pitched into the ninth inning before receiving relief help from left hander Lukas Johnson, who claimed the final two outs.

Playoff games in the Zone 2 tournament are nine inning games. Tournament action continued Wednesday afternoon in Augusta with the Final Four remaining teams, two of which will advance to the state American Legion tournament.
