OQUOSSUC — Kayak and canoe outings in the Western Maine Mountains region, where to go and how to prepare for them, as well as free fly casting lessons, will be the focus at the Outdoor Sporting Heritage Museum from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1.

Outdoor writer Doug Dunlap will at the museum to sign copies of his book “Kayak and Canoe Outings in the Western Mountains of Maine,” published in 2015, The book describes paddling opportunities in the Rangeley Lakes Chain and tributary waters, the Flagstaff and Upper Dead River region, the Sandy River Valley, the Weld area and nearby regions.

Trip preparation, equipment and safety information are included in the book and will also be demonstrated. Dunlap will have on display some gear and safety items, and welcomes discussion with museum visitors about paddling or hiking. His books will be available for purchase and signing.

Also on hand will be expert fly casting instructor Bob Dionne, who is passionate about helping others learn the sport.

He is a Registered Maine Fly Fishing Guide, is certified by the Federation of Fly Fishers as a casting instructor, served as lead instructor for the Maine TU Trout Camp for nine years and is a graduate of the Joan Wulff School for Casting Instructors.

He is a champion fly fisherman 2014 winning team captain of the Androscoggin Two Fly Contest, 2005 Maine Guide Fly Casting Champion, and is a contributing author to “50 Best Places: Fly Fishing the Northeast.”

Dionne also helped develop and present the “The Women Fly Fish Maine Event,” celebrating and promoting female fly fishing in Maine. Complete fly rod outfits will be available for museum visitors and members to use or bring a rod.
