1924 – 2015

LIVERMORE — Dr. George Henry Miller Jr., MD, 90, a resident of Livermore, passed away Tuesday, July 28, at his home with his family by his side.

He was born on Dec. 16, 1924, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of George Henry Miller Sr. and Martha (Gordon) Miller. George attended public schools in Iowa before studying at the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1942 before proceeding to Princeton University, from which he graduated in 1946. George earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine, in 1948. He completed his medical internship and residency in urology at the University of Chicago in 1949 and 1952, respectively.

George served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy, serving briefly in World War II as a hospital corpsman. He re-enlisted in 1951 as a lieutenant junior grade, assigned to Great Lakes Naval Hospital. He served on the USS Consolation hospital ship in 1952, and was dispatched to Korea and Japan for active duty. George entered the Naval Reserve in 1954.

On July 3, 1945, in Glencoe, Md., he married Sarah McCulloch. Although George had an extensive medical career, his first priority was always his family. His love, compassion and caring extended to his parents and their relatives, his sister and her family and was shared the greatest with his wife, children and grandchildren. George served as instructor and assistant professor at the University of Chicago, and the College of Medicine at the University of Florida, becoming the founder of the Division of Urology. He was promoted to assistant dean and full professor in 1968. From 1968 to 1976, George served as chief of staff at the VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla. In 1976, he accepted the position of chief of staff at the VA Medical Center in Togus, where he remained until his retirement in 1990.

George had interests that indulged his love of animals and history. He and his family maintained a sheep and horse farm in Livermore, and also housed many cats and dogs and other farm animals through the years.

He served the local community on the Board of Washburn-Norlands Living History Center and interim director during the 1990s. Although farm life kept him busy, George also enjoyed photography, golf, reading, camping, cooking and lathe-related woodwork.

George is survived by his son, Baynard Miller, (Beth) of Tallahassee, Fla., son, George Henry Miller III, (Lisa) of Waterville; daughter, Sarah Ward (Edwin) of Winthrop, and son, Duncan Miller (Robin) of Livermore; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, as well as a loving extended family.

He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Martha Miller Vance; and in 2012, by his wife of 67 years, Sarah Miller.
