Last Chance to prep for October SAT

BRUNSWICK — Maine Prep’s SAT prep classes for Brunswick area high school students will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday and Sunday, Sept. 2 through Sept. 30, at Maine Prep, 22 Parkers Way.

Classes, designed to teach students strategies to use in the math, writing and reading sections of the SAT, prepare students for the Saturday, Oct. 3, SAT. The curriculum consists of real SATs and Maine Prep’s Ten for Ten curricular materials.

The eight-session SAT prep course is specially designed to prepare high school students who plan to apply to college early decision. For seniors, the October SAT test is the last chance to improve SAT scores before early decision application deadlines.

KVCC offering “Late Start”mini-session

FAIRFIELD — Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC) is offering a “Late Start” 12-week mini-session beginning Monday, Sept. 28, for current and prospective students.

About a dozen general education, high-demand courses are being offered.

The courses are online and classroom-based and can be applied to KVCC degree programs and transferred to other colleges and universities. They offer an opportunity for students pursuing four-year degrees to earn credits toward those degrees while taking advantage of KVCC’s low tuition rate of $90 a credit hour.

The “Late Start” semester will end Dec. 13.

New grief and loss support group

SOUTH PORTLAND — A new eight-week group for adults who have lost a loved one to cancer is beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10. The group will meet every Thursday for eight weeks at the Cancer Community Center, 778 Main St.

Led by trained group facilitators, the group is a chance for participants to share the pain of losing a loved one to cancer with others who have also had the experience. Topics will include dealing with loneliness, adjusting to life without a loved one, taking next steps and finding meaning and reinvesting in life.

This is a drop-in group and no advance registration is required. Newcomers will be welcome during the first three sessions. After Thursday, Sept. 24, the group will be closed to new members.

Maine Eagles raise $33,000 for kids’ hospital

PORTLAND — The Maine Fraternal Order of Eagles raised $33,600 for the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center through the sale of T-shirts, a golf tournament, motorbike ride and a raffle. The gift includes a grant from the national Fraternal Order of Eagles organization.
