The “pay-as-you-throw” trash collection idea proposed for Lewiston will lead to more trash.
Besides that, I don’t believe that people living in apartments will buy bags that cost $2 each. I buy my trash bags at a discount store for $15 for 90 bags — less than 17 cents per bag.
The people who have trash barrels would have to buy the bags, too.
The crows and seagulls will be out there making holes in the plastic bags looking for easy food. They will make a real mess.
The city wants it, but will it profit from it?
City officials say real estate taxes will come down. Well, maybe a bit for a year or two. Those same city officials will find a way to bring the tax rate back up — they always do.
The trash-collection issue should be voted on, and I hope people vote against it. If enacted, it will be a mess.
