MINOT — Minot Consolidated School is one of two in Maine named as 2015 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education, the state and federal departments of education announced Tuesday.
The other is Coastal Ridge Elementary School in York.
The two were among 335 across the country named as National Blue Ribbon Schools, an award that honors elementary, middle and high schools where students demonstrate high achievement learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap.
“We’re really proud,” Regional School Unit 16 Superintendent Tina Meserve said. “We’re proud of the staff, of parents and students who worked to finish the application.” Their input, including feedback from parents on what makes the school special, helped, Meserve said.
Minot Consolidated is a high-performing school academically, Meserve said. Test score data from the Maine Department of Education show that 67.4 percent of students are proficient or higher in math, and 72 percent are proficient or higher in reading.
Minot Consolidated has 240 students from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade. Class sizes average 15 students.
“It’s a small community school where students know each other, the parents and community are supportive, and the staff is really dedicated,” Meserve said. All of that makes a difference in student success, she said.
School Principal Kim Spencer said in a prepared statement the school community is thrilled about the award and the school is the epicenter of town. In addition to teaching students, the school is where town meetings are held, community dinners served and sports events attended.
Each year the Maine Department of Education is invited to nominate schools for this recognition. Acting Commissioner of Education Tom Desjardin said the two schools had to meet specific national criteria.
“The process is quite detailed, so congratulations to Coastal Ridge Elementary and Minot Consolidated in being recognized as exemplary high performing schools; this is a huge honor.”
In November, Coastal Ridge Elementary School Principal Sean Murphy and Minot Consolidated School Principal Kim Spencer will travel to Washington, D.C., for two days of workshops, presentations and discussions with educators from other National Blue Ribbon Schools.
Each school will receive a plaque and a flag.
Last year, Turner Elementary was named Maine’s National Blue Ribbon School.
