Livermore Falls – Work is rushing on the International Paper Co’s new mill which is being built by Shanahan & Greenleaf, it is expected that the mill will be completed in a few weeks as the boiler house is already finished and the laying of the brick for the mill itself was begun Wednesday.

The new mill will be 250 ft. long and 100 ft. wide, the wood rooms will be two stories high and the pulp rooms one story at present. Forty grinders will be installed for grinding the pulp which is carried through two 14 in. pipes to the Otis mill, ¾ of a mile above, where it will be made into paper.

-An increase in subscription rates of The Lewiston Evening Journal, effective March 1, was announced yesterday by the two newspapers. The rate for home-delivered copies will be increased by five cents weekly. This will be the first change in rates in nearly five years and is caused by increased operating costs. The newsstand price will remain at five cents a copy.

-The Defense Department issued a draft call today for 6,000 men in April, all for the army. The Navy, which took 10,000 draftees in each of the last two months of 1955 and called for the same number in March 1956, dropped out of the draft for April.

Raccoons, deer and “Davy Crockett” rifles dominated a public hearing Tuesday before a legislative panel.

About 80 hunters, trappers and lawmakers packed into the Fisheries and Wildlife Committee hearing on a variety of bills

The proposals included one to set up a “bucks only” hunting season in parts of the state; one to hike the deer tagging fee from 25 cents to $1; one to lengthen the raccoon hunting season; and several to allow deer hunting with old-fashioned, muzzle-loading rifles.
