UMA-LA is not a strange, tropical wild beast. It is an acronym for the University of Maine at Augusta’s Lewiston-Auburn Center. Though it may not be an obvious landmark to area residents, the school has been growing like a rain forest in a monsoon. The school began as a suite of offices at 145 Lisbon St. in Lewiston in the mid-1960s, with a bookstore, secretarial offices and Director Arnold Westerberg’s office. The school was administered as a Continuing Education Division of the University of Maine at Orono. Today, through UMA, the center offers 2-year associate degree programs in liberal arts, criminal justice, business administration, and in medical lab technician at St. Mary’s General Hospital.
