NORWAY – The Hillsmen Chorus, which performs barbershop music throughout the area, will offer free lessons for four weeks beginning Monday, Jan. 16, at its meeting place, St. Catherine’s Catholic Church.
The approximately 20 chorus members, mostly in their sixties and seventies, live in Norway, South Paris, Lock Mills, Bridgton, Stow and Mechanic Falls. Co-directors Pat Fleck and Wendi Bailey will give the lessons, with registration at 6 p.m. and lessons to begin at 7 p.m.
Fleck and Bailey are certified directors in women’s barbershop. Between them, they have more than 30 years of experience in barbershop singing and directing.
The chorus welcomes any male from high-school to retirement age. The ensemble sings all types of barbershop music.
An original American music style, barbershop singing not only teaches men how to sing, it’s a way to develop friendships and leadership skills, and encourages family and community values.
The chorus sings at nursing homes, churches, the Fryeburg Fair, and other community events.
The church parking lot is on Beal Street. If it snows, the first lesson will be held the following Monday. For more information, call Dr. Tere Porter at 743-0656, evenings.
