The Bates student body has taken definite action toward abolishing hazing at this institution of learning, and the action is highly endorsed by all faculty, students and friends of the college. In years past, at Bates, as at every other college of prominence, hazing to a greater or lesser degree, has been practiced, the freshmen usually being made the victims of humiliating jokes and experiences. The sophomores were in the greater degree responsible for the hazing, although the upper classmen have often taken a hand in the “fun.” But the action to abolish hazing comes from the sophomores themselves.

50 Years Ago, 1955

PEARL HARBOR – A memorial in stone was dedicated today “To the eternal memory of those who gave their last full measure of devotion” in the Pearl Harbor attack just 14 years ago. The 10-foot memorial of lava rock, with that legend engraved on a plaque, was unveiled in a simple ceremony.

“We know the cost of not being prepared,” said Charles R. Topp, Davenport, Iowa, national commandant of the Navy Club of the United States in presenting the memorial to the Navy.

“We have a tendency – all too soon – to forget our heroes – and what is even worse, to forget the principles of which they dreamed and for which they died.”

25 Years Ago, 1980

• In an effort to grab the ears of more radio listeners and give Lewiston-Auburn residents “their own little, personal AM country music station,” Auburn’s WRXV will be changing its soft rock format to country music on Jan. 1. WRXV, which had been known as WPNO under its previous ownership, went on the air about 1½ years ago, bringing listeners what Program Director Candy Rosina calls “something different.”

• WCBB-TV of Lewiston ended its fall pledge week $74,000 richer late Sunday night. The Public Broadcasting System affiliate broke its own fund-raising records for a nine-day pledge week, easily passing its $60,000 goal during the drive’s final weekend.
