FREEPORT — Dahlov Ipcar will display new works at Frost Gully Gallery from Nov. 16 to Dec. 28.
Ipcar will share more than 40 recent oil paintings and seven rare drawings circa 1945, 1946, 1980 and 2015.
This exhibition is Ipcar’s largest solo show at the gallery, where her colorful, kaleidoscopic paintings of animals have been shown since the 1960s.
For the past seven decades, Ipcar has adhered to the philosophy that art should bring new vision to the world. “Antelope Families-Tanzania” (2014) and “Tigers of Rewa-2” (2014) showcase her distinctive use of color and whimsical, cubist backgrounds, a style Ipcar describes as “nonintellectual Cubism.”
Though almost 98 years old, Ipcar continues to hone her craft in new and unexpected ways. Progressed macular degeneration has rendered her unable to see detail, judge contrast, discern colors or adapt to changing light conditions.
Always up for a challenge and despite her impaired vision, Ipcar paints daily, making necessary stylistic shifts she observes as “looser and more open with less patterns and fewer details.” This approach is evident in “Tooky Up a Tree” (2015).
Ipcar regards this exhibition as a tribute to her friend and fellow artist, the late Thomas Crotty (Nov. 30, 1934–Aug. 22, 2015). Crotty represented Ipcar’s artwork through Frost Gully Gallery, which he operated for nearly 50 years.
Frost Gully Gallery is located at 1159 Route 1 in Freeport. The gallery is open daily from noon to 5 p.m. and by appointment. FMI: 207-865-4505, www.frostgullygallery.com.
