WASHINGTON – A Ford Motor Co. official said today the new push-button factories will mean easier, safer, better-paying jobs rather than mass unemployment. D. J. Davis, Ford’s vice president in charge of manufacturing, said his company regards the increasing use of electronic and automatic machines, known as automation, as nothing revolutionary but “just another evolutionary phase of our advancing production technology.”

BOSTON – A scientist specializing in “electronic brains” and automation equipment, today regretted that “automation is such a scare word,” and predicted a new industry arising within the computer and automation fields which may employ 12 million in the next 10 years, cut work weeks and raise pay. He hopes those benefiting will use some of the time to better themselves.
