100 years ago, 1915
The periods at Lewiston high school were shortened Friday morning. The last period was taken up by one of Hilda Harris’ classes. which gave the Forum scene from “Hamlet” in the assembly hall. The first issue of the Folio, the school paper was issued Thursday. A meeting of the debating council was held Thursday afternoon at 8 o’clock. The reports from the second period of six weeks were given out Friday morning. School closed Friday noon for the Christmas recess of two weeks.

50 years ago, 1965
An estimated 232 Lewiston school patrol boys and girls were treated to an annual Christmas party Wednesday afternoon in the auditorium at the City building. Lt. Herve J. Gendreau, traffic bureau supervisor, said the city’s ten school guides assisted officials at the festivities. During the program, two new bicycles were awarded. The winners were Alvin Wing of 185 Blake St. and Beverly Pelletier of 170 Lincoln St. Both youngsters have school patrol duty at Dingley School,

The Auburn city councilor who led Monday’s charge to prohibit a peace group from protesting on city land if hostilities broke out in the Persian Gulf said Tuesday that he’s had a change of heart. But a second councilor, Norman C. McKeone of Ward 5, said he stands by his opposition to anti-war demonstrations if violence erupts. Although he said he wants to look into the question of whether his stance would violate protesters’ rights. Legal activists say the council would be violating anti-war activists’ First Amendment rights of free speech if they based their decision on political reasons. The Maine Civil Liberties Union is monitoring the confrontation and one of its directors said Tuesday the organization might become involved if a legal battle starts.
