1923 – 2016

LISBON, Conn. — Dorothy R. Smith, 92, of Lisbon, Conn., formerly of Jay, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 2.

She was born in Jay on Jan. 23, 1923, the youngest of 10 children born to Fred and Carrie (Lee) Spofford. She grew up in Jay and attended Jay schools. On June 14, 1940, she married Harlan Smith Sr. and they had 64 years together before he passed in 2004 in Norwich, Conn.

Her greatest love was of family and friends and she was happiest when surrounded by them. She always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. She was loved by many and will be deeply missed but always fondly remembered in our hearts. Dorothy loved to crochet and made beautiful afghans. She was a passionate UConn Huskies women’s basketball fan. She was also a member of the Lisbon Senior Citizens.

She was the beloved mother of Judy Marrotte (Robert) of Franklin, Conn., Harlan Jr. aka “Sonny” (Gloria) of Windham, Richard (Jane) of Willimantic, Conn., Jean Barile (Nick) of Norwich, Conn., Linda Kellogg of Norwich, Conn., Duane (Susan) of Lisbon, Conn. We were blessed to have her as our mom. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by her parents; as well as her siblings.
