RUMFORD — The Oxford County Democrats held a 2016 kick-off dinner and program on Jan. 14 at the Eagles Hall, preceded by a social hour.

The event included special recognition for state Sen. John Patrick, Rep. Matt Peterson, Register of Deeds Patricia Shearman and Sheriff Wayne Gallant.

Speaker of the House Mark Eves spoke about his time in the Legislature and welcomed the 2016 candidates.

The campaign for the Second Congressional District Democratic nomination in Congress was presented by Joe Baldacci, Bangor city councilman and former mayor of Bangor. Corey Haskall spoke for Emily Cain, who was unable to attend.

The presidential campaign representatives of Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton were present, brought materials and sought to sign up volunteers. Clinton’s campaign was represented by Makayla Reed, the campaign’s Maine field director. Sanders’ campaign was represented by Colin O’Neill of Oxford, a Maine Young Democrat, who is a staffer in the Berlin, N.H., office.

Troy Jackson, former state senator, also spoke about his friendship with Patrick, former state Sen. Bryant and Newell.

Information about the March 6 caucuses will be available after the caucus convenor training on Jan. 24 in Waterford.

Patrick and Newell presented certificates of appreciation to Oxford County Register of Deeds Patricia Shearman of Norway and Sheriff Wayne Gallant of Rumford, highlighting their work for the people of Oxford County and their assistance to other Democratic candidates through the years.

Peterson’s certificate will be presented at a spring event honoring his service as he concludes his four terms in the House.

Newell announced that the sheriff will receive a community service award from the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce on March 5 at its annual dinner.
