DIXFIELD — Regional School Unit 10 Superintendent Craig King said Tuesday that he hopes to shepherd creation of an operating budget for school year 2016-17 that is no more than two percent above the current year’s figure of $36.4 million.

“We do need to make some increases,” he said.

The school board heard requests from several cost centers during Monday’s regular meeting.

At the upcoming Feb. 8 meeting, requests by curriculum and instruction and the gifted and talented program will be presented, he said. Requests by special education and transportation will be presented on Feb. 22.

A preliminary budget will be presented at the April 11 board meeting, on which the board will take action at a later April meeting. Public hearings will be held on May 18 and 19.

A districtwide, town meeting-style vote is set for May 25, followed by a referendum vote on the determined dollar amount on May 25. Residents at each of the district’s 12 member towns will record their decisions at the polls on June 14.

In other matters at Monday’s board meeting, King said the board approved a policy for the administration of medicinal marijuana to students. He said students that require the medicine must have a prescription for the liquid form of the drug and it must be administered by a school nurse.

Also on Monday:

• A Buildings and Grounds Committee meeting was set for 6 p.m., Jan. 28, at the Central Office; and

• Mountain Valley Middle School Principal Ryan Casey said a Diversity Day, which provides opportunities for students to learn about a wide variety of people, will be set for a still-undetermined date in the spring.
